Frequently Asked Questions – General

According to the Ellen Macarthur Foundation (EMF), the circular economy is a system where materials never become waste and nature is regenerated. In a circular economy, products and materials are kept in circulation through processes like maintenance, reuse, refurbishment, remanufacture, recycling, and composting. The circular economy tackles climate change and other global challenges, like biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution, by decoupling economic activity from the consumption of finite resources.

While Circularity is often characterized by the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), the EU has identified 9Rs – Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture, Repurpose, and Recycle as part of its Categorisation System for the Circular Economy.

This is different from a linear economy where resources are extracted to make products that eventually end up as waste and are thrown away. Products and materials are generally not used to their full potential in a linear economy and, as the name suggests, always move in one direction – from raw material to waste. It is a polluting system that degrades natural systems and is the driver of global challenges, including climate change and biodiversity loss.

In 1987, the United Nations Brundtland Commission defined Sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Forum for the Future defines Sustainability as a dynamic process that enables all people to realize their potential and to improve their quality of life in ways that simultaneously protect and enhance the Earth’s life support system.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership.

The three pillars of sustainability are: economic, environmental and social, reflecting the commonly mentioned 3Ps i.e., profits, planet and people.

In short, Sustainability treads a fine balance between the three pillars or Ps, meeting the needs of present and future generations. Sustainability is about all Stakeholders reflecting multiple pillars rather than Shareholder primacy as coined by Milton Friedman in the 70s.

While Sustainability sets out the objective of “meeting needs, present and future”, or “realizing potential, improve quality of life”, and identifying participants “stakeholders – shareholders, employees, community, supply chain, regulators, etc.”, Circularity identifies an avenue to achieving that objective for participants.

By redesigning systems to (a) eliminate waste (b) circulate products and materials and (c) regenerate nature, the circular economy avoids creating, or reduces, many of the externalities that would otherwise propagate in the linear economy such as emissions, biodiversity loss, waste and pollution.

FullCircle is a tribute to Circularity.

The “Circle” signifies the closing of the loop that keeps products and materials in circulation for as long as possible, slowing its travel along the loop, while also increasing the number of loops taken. As far as shapes go, the concept might just as easily be conveyed as a square or other closed shape.

The “Full” signifies that all materials (Biological and Technical) used in products should ideally fully return to their original state – Carbon for Biological (e.g. cotton in T-shirts, or food waste) and Mineral for Technical (e.g. rare metals in mobile phones). The “Full” is also meant to convey that Circularity isn’t just about Recycling, which it is most commonly associated with, but also the more valuable steps of Reducing (preventing purchases), and Reuse of products to extend their life (through Repair and Refurbishment).

It also helped that a FullCircle is evocative of the Zero, or Net Zero emissions that we need to get to as a planet.

FullCircle enables Consumers (homeowners or tenants) to record key product and service warranties, receipts and contracts associated with their home. By doing so, Consumers are able to fully avail of promised product or service warranties, leading to better utilization of products already in circulation, or human effort already performed. Additionally, Consumers have a seamless and stress-free experience in locating documents than rummaging through physical files or boxes, or searching through digital folders and emails.

FullCircle enables Professionals such as Real Estate Agents (REAs) and Interior Designers (IDs) to manage their client work.

REAs are able to record key product and service warranties, receipts, manuals and contracts associated with tenancies they manage. FullCircle enables transfers of such property profiles amongst REAs, tenants and/or landlords so that all parties have easy access to key details such as warranty status and receipts as proof of purchase.

On the other hand, IDs make multiple purchases on behalf of homeowners during client engagements e.g., purchasing lighting fixtures or bathroom /kitchen table tops that come with warranties.. FullCircle enables IDs to make digital records of these purchases and transfer these to their clients.

Similar to Consumers, FullCircle enables Businesses to record key product and service warranties, receipts and contracts associated with their business. By doing so, Businesses are able to fully avail of promised product or service warranties, eliminating a “deadweight loss” and leading to better utilization of products already in circulation.
